Malaysia to step up surveillance of 870 local hog farms

Malaysia said Monday (April 27) it is on alert following an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico and will step up surveillance at 870 local hog farms in the country.

"Malaysia doesn't import live animals and animal products from Mexico. It also doesn't import live hogs from the US," Minister for Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Noh Omar said.

He said the swine flu virus can't be caught from eating pork that is cooked properly.
