Death toll continues rising in Mexico
The number of human casualties in the swine flu outbreak has exceeded 100 while suspected cases have risen over 1600, according to Mexico's health authorities.
The UN is warning of a potential pandemic. As a result, schools in and around Mexico City and in the state of San Luis Potosi will remain closed until May 6 to prevent further spread of the disease. Another 70 percent of bars and restaurants have also closed.
Testing for the virus begun April 13, with 81 deaths recorded possibly linked to the virus but only 20 cases confirmed by laboratory tests during the period, said Mexico's health secretary Dr Jose Cordova Villalobos.
Mexico's President Felipe Calderon has implemented emergency measures, including powers to isolate individuals suspected of having the virus without fear of legal repercussions, and the inspection of houses and travellers' luggage.
The government could also prevent public gatherings, close public avenues and regulate air, sea and overland travel. Health authorities advise the use of masks until there's clarity on how the virus is spreading.
