UK pigs show no signs of swine flu

UK pigs are being monitored for any signs of swine flu to prevent further spreading of the disease said the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Monday (April 27).

"There is continual surveillance of pigs in this country and there is currently no evidence of this variant of the disease," said Nigel Gibbens, the UK's chief veterinary officer. "Swine influenza cannot be transmitted by eating pork products."

Human cases of swine flu have been reported in Mexico and certain areas of the US.

Some countries, including Indonesia, China, Thailand and Russia, are banning imports of pork from Mexico and the US, however, existing European Union rules already prevent imports in to the EU of all live pigs and pig meat from Mexico.
