New Zealand's mutton exports for the March 2012 quarter have plunged significantly for the second consecutive quarter, declining by 39% on-year to 21,318 tonnes.
Despite falling 39% on-year, the EU was the largest export destination for New Zealand's mutton, reaching 6,216 tonnes for the first quarter, and maintaining a 29% of export share. Shipments to "other markets" also fell 39% over the same period, but remained the second largest destination, collectively reaching 4,139 tonnes.
In contrast, New Zealand's mutton exports to China jumped by 15% on the March quarter last year, to 3,946 tonnes. Over this period, China doubled their market share from 9% to 18%, to firmly cement their position as the third largest export market.
