Canadian company to market canola meal to fish farms

A Canadian company based in Saskatchewan is setting out to market concentrated canola meal to fish farms around the world.

The new company, Can Pro Ingredients Ltd., with US$19 million from six venture capital funds, uses processing technology from MCN BioProducts Inc. of Saskatoon.

The process concentrates canola meal into a high-protein content feed for aquaculture. The protein concentrate would have a protein content of 65 per cent, the same level as in fishmeal, Lahti said.

Todd Lahti of Saskatoon, president and CEO of Can Pro, says salmon farms around the world are having difficulty finding alternatives to fishmeal and are looking at plant-based alternatives high in protein. The company is confident the dried, concentrated granular canola meal product would fit the bill.
