Philippine agriculture secretary denies corn shortage

Philippine Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap refuted reports there is shortage of corn supply in the Philippines but only a "challenge to properly match the production of farmers and the needs of corn-users".

Yap said feed users are naturally competing to buy the summer corn crop for its superior quality which is creating the mistaken impression of a shortage.

The off-season program, which allows corn farmers to plant during the months of February to April, will enable them to harvest during the lean months.

Yap further stressed that in the province of Pangasinan alone corn farmers have surpassed their dry season target. The agriculture chief said this is based from reports from corn coordinators and the local government units of the province.

National Corn Program Director Dennis Araullo said corn production is much better this year compared to last year.

He notes that the increase with the prices in local corn follows the increase in its value in the international markets.
