Malaysia may acquire bird flu-free status in May

Malaysia will be declared free of the H5N1 bird flu virus by the end of May if there are no new cases between now and then, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin Wednesday (Apr 26).

Since there have been no new case of the H5N1 virus detected in poultry and other birds in the country, it would be relatively safe to say the country was free of the disease, he said.

However, surveillance is still needed because of previous cases." he told reporters at his office.
