Brazil 2003-04 Soy Harvest 88% Complete

Brazil's 2003-04 soybean harvest was 88% complete up to Friday, ahead of the 85% collected at the same point last year, the local Celeres agricultural consultancy said Monday.

Harvesting in the center-west region is practically complete, while in the south of the country, some 81% of the crop had been collected up to Friday, compared with 80% at the same time last year, Celeres said in a weekly report.

In Rio Grande do Sul, where harvesting is 65% complete, rains returned last week after a four-month absence. The rains, however, came to late to reverse heavy losses in the region, said Celeres.

In the northeast 69% of the crop was harvested up to last week, compared to 70% at the same time last year.

According to the report, farmers had sold 61% of their crop up till Friday, compared with 47% last year and a five-year average of 58%.
