Pork prices in Thailand to be controlled

Thailand will place pork on its list of commodities subject to price controls next month in an attempt to prevent domestic stocks from leaving the country due to increasing prices.

Siripol Yodmuangcharoen, director-general of the Department of Internal Trade said over the last few weeks, prices have risen in part due to hotter weather conditions that can decrease growth rate, and also because of increased demand for pork in the country.

The new control measures, along with campaigns to encourage supermarkets to have lower promotional retail prices would be effective in bringing the price of pork to as low as 85-86 baht/kg in large stores, he said.
