China Egg Fortnightly Report: Prices weak amid sluggish demand in recent weeks (Apr 20, 2005)
An eFeedLink exclusive report
Egg prices in China have been on a downward trend since Feb 27, registering falls between RMB0.16-0.8.
Analysts attributed the price weakness to the following:
- The period following the Spring Festival holiday in mid-February is a traditional lull season for consumption of poultry products. Thus, demand for eggs has been sluggish in the past weeks.
- Egg production volume has picked up with the approach of warmer weather in recent days. Furthermore, in anticipation of prices rising after the Qing Ming Tomb Sweeping Remembrance in mid-April, some farmers have delayed the slaughter of their layers to increase egg production.
With egg production seen to continue rising, coupled with the recent weakness in feed prices, egg prices in China were expected to remain weak in the coming weeks.
