Algeria's Q1 2012 wheat imports drop 13%

As compared with 1.65 million tonnes in the same period last year, Algeria's wheat imports dropped by almost 13% to 1.44 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2012, according to customs data.

Out of the total amount imported, 1.06 million tonnes was soft wheat, and the rest was durum wheat, according to a customs service document obtained Sunday (Apr 22).

The biggest suppliers of wheat to Algeria during the period included France, Argentina and Canada. The Agriculture Ministry said on April 8 it expects the country's wheat production to climb to 5.5 million tonnes this year, a 31% increase from 2011.
