US BSE feed ban to have no effect on South Korea's beef imports

The US BSE feed ban will not affect South Korea's imports of US beef, a government official said Thursday (Apr 23).

Chang Ki-yoon, chief veterinary officer at the agriculture ministry, said while the original agreement signed last April calls for Seoul to allow the import of various meat and bone cuts from cattle over 30 months old if the US enforces tougher feed control rules, additional talks that ended in June effectively excused the government from taking such a step.

Chang said there will no change in meats that are allowed for imports.

Under the provisions reached, South Korea need not import US beef from older animals until public concerns about BSE have been alleviated.

The US has delayed again the implementation of the new feed rules to October 26.
