India hopes China will open its market to more poultry and farm imports
India hopes China may soon be opening its doors to Indian agriculture and poultry exports, India's commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath announced.
The minister remarked that agriculture takes up twice as much of the GDP in India (24 percent) as in China (10 percent). This made it easy for China to become major importers of agri-products, he said.
He added that India is working with the Chinese government to ensure that in the next couple of months, China opens up its markets to India's agriculture and poultry exports.
The minister said talks are ongoing to remove strict sanitary requirements on farm imports from India.
China traditionally imports various agri-products from New Zealand, but with more affluence in the population comes greater demand. New Zealand has been struggling to cope with the increased demand and China may be looking for alternative sources, the minister said.
