Alltech's Premier Pig Program launches in Malaysia

World-renowned expert Dr Bruce Mullan presented the latest information on sow and boar nutrition to a group of industry leaders at the launch of the Premier Pig Program in Malaysia in March 2006. The first workshop titled 'Sow and Boar' was sponsored by Alltech, one of the leading animal health companies.  The workshop is the first in a series of three interactive workshops presented as part of the Premier Pig Program.

The aim of the programme is to provide technical information, suggest target objectives for modern pig production and provide on-farm solution and actions. "We see this programme as an excellent way to provide local producers with technology and technical information needed for long-term, sustainable growth," said Dr Richard Chong, Alltech Malaysia / Singapore General Manager.

Dr Mullan, a senior research officer with Agriculture Western Australia, emphasised how nutrition and management are key components that ensure the modern sow achieves her genetic potential for reproduction. In practice, the actual performance is often well below the animal's capability and on many farms, the norm is 20 to 22 piglets a sow each year compared with good commercial performance of 24 to 26 piglets, or indeed, the often quoted genetic potential of 30 piglets a sow each year.

The series of workshops not only provided information focusing on nutrition and management, but also suggested target levels of performance so that attendees can benchmark the farm performance against industry standards. In addition, the workshops provided producers with a unique opportunity to discuss problems they have experienced and hear about possible solutions. All information covered in the workshops is contained in the Alltech Pig Program Manual that is given to the delegates.  The manual details appropriate nutrition and management of the pig at all stages of production.
