China's dairy cow herd has increased substantially over the last two years. Dairy production enterprises in the country are increasingly focusing on the expansion of dairy cow farming and enhancement of production skills. Milk production throughout China has continued to register brisk growth since January 2004.

Based on the developments in 2003, dairy production in Hunan and Jiangxi is growing rapidly by as much as 46% and 32% respectively. The growth of dairy production in the southern provinces such as Fujian, Anhui, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou and Hubei also exceeded 20% in 2003. The dairy cattle on hand and dairy milk production in south China have also exhibited rapid increases over the years. In 2004, the dairy industry in these southern regions is expected to maintain substantial growth.

In 2004, production by the key milk-producing regions, namely Heilongjiang, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Shandong and Shaanxi, is expected to hit around 70% of China's total milk production.
