Boehringer Ingelheim reports strong net sales increase

German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim announced its annual figures with an increase of 9.5 percent in net sales at EUR11.6 billion in 2008.

The animal health business contributed to the company's growth figures, with an increase in net sales of 19.5 percent to EUR467 million. The growth driver was the swine vaccine Ingelvac CircoFlex®, with an increase in net sales by more than 140 percent to some EUR90 million.

In a press release, the company said total operating income, comparable to earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), was again at the planned level and, at almost EUR2 billion, produced financially sound profitability comparable to the previous year.

Operating income as a percentage of sales was 17.1 percent in 2008 at EUR1.4 billion, income after taxes stood at a similarly high level to that of the previous year, excluding one-off effects in 2007.

The company also increased its investments in the future with expenditure for research and development rising by EUR200 million, or up 11 percent against the previous year.
