Australian farmers' harvest down on fertiliser shortage

Following the announcement of a chemical company that it can't supply a major fertiliser, farmers across NSW say this year's harvest could be significantly reduced.

Incitec Pivot has advised growers that supplies of anhydrous ammonia, known commercially as Big N, will be drastically limited in central and southern NSW.

The problem arises from the recent closure of the Orica plant at Newcastle and other logistical factors.

Fertiliser distributor Sam Maroulis says he can't promise any fertiliser to his growers.

"It'll certainly have a major impact on my business; we're set up to distribute Incitec's product, depot to farm, and we've got a lot of infrastructure tied up in that part of my business.

"It'll also have a major impact on our customers, the growers - because equally they've got infrastructure tied up to use this product."
