USDA to support school food safety research
USDA will provide a US$800,000 grant in fiscal 2010 to establish a centre of excellence for school food safety research at a selected university.
The centre will aim to provide science-based support to improve the safety of foods provided through the nutrition assistance programmes, particularly those served in schools and child care settings, USDA said.
The grant is part of a number of initiatives USDA announced earlier this year to improve the National School Lunch Programme's food safety and quality. Notices of intent to submit applications for the grant are due May 7, and USDA said it plans to award the grant to a university by October 15.
