China reducing reliance on wheat import

China imported 7.2 million tonnes of wheat in 2004 and 3.5 million tonnes in 2005. However, it only imported about 610,000 tonnes last year, according to the General Administration of Customs.

A repeat of the trend of reduced reliance is expected again this year as February import reached 50,000 tonnes and January import was only 20,000 tonnes.
