Ukraine sees 2011-12 grain export potential at 22-23 million tonnes

Ukraine's grain export potential in the next marketing year (July 2011-June 2012) will be 22-23 million tonnes, Director of the UkrAgroConsult Analytical Center Serhiy Feofilov.

"Ukraine's overall grain export potential next year will be at a high level, 22-23 million tonnes, including wheat, barley, and maize," he said.

The expert noted that largest increase would be reported in the wheat export potential due to large stocks of this crop from the 2010 harvest.

Feofilov said that the export potential of oil-bearing crops would also grow. "There will be a slight increase in the export potential of sunflower and soybean," he said.

According to the forecasts of the Cabinet of Ministers, the total demand for grain on the domestic market in the 2010-2011 marketing year will amount to 26.2 million tonnes.

This year, Ukraine is the third-largest exporter of barley (16.7% on the world market), the fourth-largest exporter of corn (6%) and the sixth-largest exporter of wheat (5.4%), despite the introduction of grain export quotas. Every year the country receives US$1.5-2 billion in income from grain exports.

In the current marketing year (from July 1), according to projections by the Agriculture and Food Ministry, the country will export 12 million tonnes of grain.
