More Singaporeans opting for frozen meat
Supermarket chains have reported a 30 percent increase of frozen meat sales since February.
Food prices in Singapore have been going up and the AVA has been promoting frozen meat since February. Consumers have warmed up to that idea as a way to fight rising prices without losing nutritional value as proven by current sales statistic.
Supermarket chain Cold Storage reported that sales of frozen chicken wings have gone up by 30 percent while Carrefour has seen 3,000 more packs of frozen pork being sold.
Frozen meat suppliers have also reported of a 15 percent increase in sales.
However, frozen meat is now slightly more expensive than the previous year and Liew Yew Fah, director of meat supplier Pin Corporation, said that the hikes would likely continue.
Despite the price hike, frozen meat will still cost up to 40 percent less than chilled meat.
Singapore imports more than half of its poultry meat from Brazil, which is experiencing rising oil, crop and feed prices, which in turn pushes up the shipping costs to Singapore.
