Argentina reports 9.29 million tonnes of corn sales
Argentina had sold 9.29 million metric tons of 2007-08 corn as of April 11, up from 8.98 million tonnes a week earlier, the Agriculture Secretariat said Friday.
Despite the slight increase, Argentina corn sales have shrunk significantly from last year's 15 million tonnes.
Spain is by far, the largest Argentina corn market, accounting for 2 million tonnes of corn, up 21 percent from the previous year's purchase of 1.6 million tonnes.
Algeria, Egypt, Iran and Portugal each imported about 600,000 tonnes of Argentina corn. However, corn exports to Algeria has dropped by 42 percent from last year's 1 million tonnes, and exports to Egypt has also fallen by 45 percent from last year's 1.1 million tonnes. Exports to Portugal suffered a slight dip of 7 percent from last year's 647,000 tonnes while Iran did not import corn from Argentina last year.
Corn exports to other markets such as Malaysia, South Africa and Peru have also seen a significant decrease.
