Romanian wheat crop to increase in 2011

Agriculture minister, Valeriu Tabara, has declared that output of wheat may increase by 7% in 2011 to over six million tonnes this year in spite of the fact that the area farmed is smaller than in 2010.

Romania has put about 1.8 million hectares under wheat as compared to about two million hectares last season, Tabara said. He also said that he expects wheat exports to increase, but declined to give a figure.

Romania's wheat crop reached a total of 5.6 million tonnes in 2010, an increase from 5.2 million tonnes in 2009, according to early data from the country's statistics board.
