Ukraine seen to double grain production

Ukraine has a chance to double the harvest of grain and significantly improve its quality, Deputy Minister of Agricultural Policy Serhiy Melnyk told a round-table meeting on grain quality issues.

In his words, currently Ukraine is a powerful player on the global grain markets. Meanwhile, the state has big perspectives in this area, as not all opportunities have been used.

''Consolidated efforts of the agricultural business and power are required, as well as reforms that would take Ukrainian agriculture to a higher level,'' the deputy minister said.

In 2009, Ukraine harvested 46 million tonnes of grain (after processing), including 22.3 million tonnes of bread grain, and 23.7 million tonnes of feed grain.
