Thailand's seafood exports rise twofold

Japan's demand for Thai seafood products have doubled after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, with several Japanese representatives having visited the country for product orders.

Boonchoo Saiyasakpong, chief executive officer of Trang Seafood Products, mentioned the changes this afternoon, saying orders from Japan have risen by 100%, forcing the company to maximise productivity levels to cope with the high demands.

According to the report, Thai seafood manufacturing firms are currently seeking for the approval of Trang provincial employment office to allow them to employ up to 500 more alien workers to facilitate greater productivity.

Products currently on demand from Japan include salmon, fresh squid, roasted Saba fish, herring and Takoyaki dumplings. These products are also on high demand from 10 other countries, including those in Europe, as well as China, South Korea and the US.

Meanwhile, Boonchoo said radiation leaks in northeast Japan will have no impact on these firms because they are all export-based.
