Pig prices hikes in Malaysia

The price of pigs from farms has been increased by MYR0.30 to MYR7.90 for every 100 grammes in Malaysia late last week.

Federation of Livestock Farmers Association chairman (swine unit) Jeffery Beh said it was the first time that the price of the animal had reached so high.

Beh, who blamed the increase on higher price of pig feed worldwide caused by natural disasters, said the price of corn was MYR400 per tonne four years ago but had now risen to between MYR860 and MYR870.

He hoped that the new price would be maintained until year-end, according to reports, adding that all members at a conference agreed on the price increase.

"The increase is also due to the demand for pigs now which is higher than supply," he added.

On concerns that the federation may face backlash from consumer groups after the increase, Beh said they were prepared for it.

"We know there may be some who will take the opportunity to raise prices. We have no choice but to increase the ex-farm price of the animal," he said, adding that the price is still considered low compared with neighbouring countries.
