Drought hits southern Vietnam's shrimp farms
Drought is striking more than 100,000 hectares, or half of the total shrimp farming area in Vietnam's southern-most Ca Mau province, according to the Information Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agroinfo).
The centre added that drought has also damaged nearly 3,000 hectares of crops, leading to destruction of a large area of orchard while killing cattle and poultry flocks.
Ca Mau is one of the largest shrimp breeding areas in Vietnam with total output of 8,000 tonnes and shrimp export revenues of US$50 million in the first quarter of this year.
