Pakistan targets 23 million tonnes wheat production for 2006/07
 

Pakistan's government has estimated domestic wheat production at 23 million tonnes for 2006/07, up 6 percent from 21.7 million tonnes the previous year.

The 2007/08 target for cotton output is 14.14 million bales from 3.26 million hectares, compared with 13 million bales for 2006/07.

Pakistan's agriculture sector registered a growth of about 4 percent over the past four years, Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan said at a news conference.

Bosan added that the government would export wheat over and above the domestic requirement of 20.5 million tonnes without revealing any specific export destinations and other relevant details.

Domestic corn production target for 2007/08 is set at 3.2 million tonnes.
