China disallows farm imports from 12 regions of Japan

China has forbidden imports of farm produce from 12 areas near Japan's stricken nuclear power plant.

The state-run Xinhua News Agency said Saturday (Apr 9) that the move was made as a precautionary measure because of ongoing issues with northeastern Japan's radiation leaking Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, which was damaged by the immense March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Food and farming imports from other areas of Japan will be tested for radioactivity and will require certificates showing where they were produced.

China has been on high alert for pollution since the nuclear power plant in neighboring Japan began leaking radiation. Trace quantities of atmospheric radiation have been found in many parts of China.
