Russia reports H5 subtype bird flu in far east region
The government of Russia's far eastern Primorsky region announced on Friday the H5 subtype of bird flu had been discovered in the 10 poultry that died on a private holding in the village of Vozdvizhenka.
The announcement said the owner of the holding had killed migrating birds, which are coming to the region in large numbers now from Southeast Asia, and fed their innards to his poultry.
The area around the village has been quarantined and the affected birds have been burnt. Local veterinary services are monitoring the situation in the neighboring districts.
