German egg industry lobbies for origin labelling of food products
An EU-wide origin labelling of food products that contain eggs or egg products was appreciated by the German egg industry, which welcomes plans of the federal government to consider this type of extensive labelling of food.
"Consumers should be able to recognise at first glance from which country an egg comes from and in which system it was produced, even when this concerns processed eggs'', says Bernd Diekmann, chairman of the Association of German Eggs (BDE) and vice president of the Association of German Poultry Industry (ZDG).
German egg producers asked their national government to lobby for an EU-wide scheme. Any labelling should apply regardless of whether the eggs have been produced in Germany or not.
