Brazil pork exports boosted by rivals' lower hog production

Lower hog production in Canada and the EU has boosted Brazil's pork exports in the first quarter of 2009 compared with the same period last year, said the president of the Brazilian Hog Farmers Association (ABCS) on Wednesday (Apr 8).

Brazil's pork exports in the first quarter rose 17.9 percent to 116,300 tonnes, said Brazil's Development, Industry and Foreign Trade Ministry.

Despite this, Abipecs insisted that pork should be included in the government's minimum price guarantee programme, meaning financing would be provided for the industry to stockpile pork.

Canada's pork exports and hog production are each expected to drop 10 percent this year.
