China hopes to double ethanol production by 2010

China would produce 2 million tonnes of fuel ethanol annually by 2010 and 10 million tonnes by 2020, according to estimates from the State Energy Office of the State Council.

In China, fuel ethanol, or grain alcohol, is made from corn, wheat, potato, molasses or juice of sweat kaoliang stalk.

Current production is estimated at 1 million tonnes, with factories in Jilin Province, Henan Province and Anhui Province.

China is also conducting its own experiments to use such fuels in cars.
