Norway's seafood exports soar in March

Norway's seafood exports spiked to a record high NOK4.7 billion (US$783.8 million) in March 2010, up by NOK1billion (US$168 million) on-year, according to the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC) on Wednesday (Apr 7).

In the first quarter of 2010, Norway exported seafood worth NOK12.4 billion (US$2.08 billion), up by 18% on-year. Fresh seafood currently accounts for more than one half of the total exports.

"We have also registered record-high salmon exports, at the same time as sales of salted fish and dried fish are rising following a tough 2009," NSEC Market Information Director Egil Ove Sundheim said.

Salmon exports grew by 37% on-year to NOK6.5 billion (US$1.09 billion) in January to March this year.

The exports of Norwegian salmon also grew by 48% from the same month a year ago, or NOK870 million (US$146 million), setting a new record in March 2010. The development was driven by high export prices and volume.
