Indonesia to increase beef import

Indonesia is intending to increase the amount of imported beef from 50,000 tonnes to 72,000 tonnes in 2011.

The decision has been taken in light of drop in the production in the home country.

Suswono, Agriculture Minister of country, said that data released recently displays that the counting of 12 million cows in Indonesia was incorrect, and the government is looking to conduct an accurate counting of cow in June.

Suswono said, "Thus after the June cow census, we will know exactly how much beef we can actually produce."

The Indonesia's government is estimated that the beef demand will reach 423,000 tonnes by this year. Around 26,000 tonnes beef has been imported in the country so far and the total estimated demand for beef is expected to grow by 6.1% in 2011.
