Canada's rapeseed plant to startup in September

A Saskatchewan rapeseed plant that will process 850,000 tonnes per year is on target for a September 1 startup, an official with LDM Foods confirmed.

LDM Foods, a partnership between Louis Dreyfus Canada and Mitsui Canada, said the facility will produce roughly 500,000 tonnes of meal and 350,000 tonnes of rapeseed oil per year.

"There is still some construction ongoing, and once that is complete, the process of commissioning the facility will begin," said plant manager Brent German. Construction of the facility began in September 2006.

The plant, located in the heart of the rapeseed-growing region in eastern Saskatchewan, is expected to procure the majority of its rapeseed directly from producers in the area.

The site is served by both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways and can service export demand through Vancouver and all US domestic demand.

The plant has also started accepting rapeseed production contracts with producers, he said.
