Japanese beef imports from Mexico increase
Out of the 36,905 tonnes of beef shipped into Japan, 1,562 tonnes were from Mexico and the amount increased by 137% as compared to the past.
Almost 80% of shipments from Mexico during the month consisted of frozen briskets, to be largely used in the gyudon (beef rice bowl) sector. Mexico has a preferential tariff agreement with Japan, allowing up to 6,000 tonnes per year.
Chilled and frozen imports from Australia lifted 2% to 10,807 tonnes and 6% to 14,150 tonnes from February 2010, respectively.
