Japan urges for Europe's calm response towards food imports
In an appeal to the EU, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan has asked for a calm, logical response towards food imports from Japan.
Kan spoke to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso over the telephone and said Japan would continue to provide the international community, including the EU, with the utmost transparency over developments at its stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Many countries have stopped or restricted food imports from Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11 damaged the plant and resulted in leakage of radiation in the surrounding areas. The EU has urged radiation testing of Japanese food and feed imports.
