Sri Lanka grant investment approval to Weells Meat Processing
Weells chairman and director general Dhammika Perera signed the agreement on behalf of the BOI and formally presented the BOI Certificate of Registration to the investor.
The agreement with the company is for a project to process fish, meat and fruits for the export market.
The project represents an investment of US$1 million and is expected to provide 50 new employment opportunities.
Speaking on the venture, Muthukuda stated that the state-of-the-art processing plant will be located at Nugape, Pamunugama in the Gampaha district.
He added that meat products include meatballs, sausages, nuggets, ham, bacon and slices among many others, while fish products include frozen fish, fishballs, fish sausages, tuna and whole fish.
According to the chairman, the company is primarily targeting the European Union (EU) countries for its products.
He also said that this is the first phase of the project while the second phase is expected to commence towards the end of 2010.
