EU cattle herd rises by 1.1%
An overall EU herd increase of 1.1% in 2012 was shown in the latest cattle figures with an increase of over 508,000 animals.
Reaching almost 22.9 million the EU dairy herd increased by 186,000, aided in part by German herd figures remaining stable at 4.19 million.
Austrian cattle figures dropped 1.1% to 1.95 million with a 0.8% fall in dairy cow numbers to 523, 369.
The strongest increase was seen in Hungary (+8.5%) to 753,000 units.
France has the most cattle of any EU country with 19 million, down 0.5% on 2011.
