Indian experts recommend wheat planters to hold produce
Experts from Junagadh Agriculture University (JAU) in India have recommended the wheat planters of Gujarat to sell their output in installments.
R L Shiyani from the Agriculture Economics Department at JAU has said that the prices may not rise much owing to bumper production due to favourable weather conditions across India. The prices are likely to remain in the range of INR240-310 (US$5.40-6.98) per 20 kilogrammes at the time of harvesting between April and June 2011.
However, the prices might witness a marginal increase if the government allows export in future, he said.
The global wheat consumption is expected to rise by 1% and the production expected to decline by 4% in 2010-11. Lower wheat production is expected in the Black Sea region, Russia and Canada due to adverse weather conditions. The wheat production in the EU, the world's largest wheat producing region, is also estimated to go down by three million tonnes in 2010-11, he said.
