China declares victory on bird flu prevention
 

Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on Tuesday (Apr 4) that China has successfully contained and eliminated the 35 outbreaks in the coutnry and that its bird flu prevention campaign is starting to see results.

China has improved its emergency preparedness, strengthened its monitoring and immunization programmes. It has also enhanced public awareness and drawn up supportive policies for the poultry industry, said Hui at a meeting with David Nabarro, UN co-ordinator for avian and human influenza.

Hui said China is appreciative of the role the UN played in the prevention and containment of the bird flu epidemic.

Nabarro said China's prompt and efficient control of the bird flu situation contributed to international efforts to stamp out the disease.
