In order to deal with oversupply of chicken eggs in the country, Thailand's Egg Board will run a campaign to promote higher egg consumption among the population and hopes to increase yearly egg intake from 220 eggs per person to 284 eggs by 2018, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.
Caretaker Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Yukol Limlaemthong told reporters one of the campaign's objectives is to promote awareness of the nutritional value of eggs.
Authorities predict the country will have an oversupply of 38 million of eggs every day as 149,000 chickens imported last year are expected to produce eggs in the middle of the year.
An additional 830,000 chickens are due to be imported this year.
Farmers Society chairman Chaiporn Seesan said farmers have been adversely affected by a fall in egg prices from THB3.10 (US$0.10) per egg to THB2.60 (US$0.09) in the domestic market.
The society has called on the Egg Board to review the country's egg import plan this year to control oversupply of eggs.
