N.S. plant to be sold by Maple Leaf

According to Maple Leaf Foods Inc., one of Canada's biggest food processors, said it will give up its Berwick, N.S., facility to a poultry processing company, Eden Valley Poultry, a new company possessed by United Poultry Producers and Maple Lodge Holding Corp.

Maple Leaf, a leading pork processor and baker, markets Schneider's brand meats and Dempster's bread.

Immediately, after the deal closes, which is expected on May 13, Eden Valley Poultry will begin decommissioning the existing facility, Maple Leaf said. Eden Valley will build a new plant at the site to process more than 40 million kilogrammes of poultry a year. It is expected to be operating by the summer of 2012.
