US researchers to develop new generation PRRS vaccine

Researchers in the South Dakota State University (SDSU) are working to develop a new PRRS vaccine to mitigate damages caused by the disease to the global pig industry.

The new vaccine will be genetically engineered, according to Ying Fang, research assistant professor.

The research team will be using a technique called "reverse genetics", which is the cloning of the PRRS virus and then using that clone to manipulate the viral genomes.

The team also aims to identify the genes responsible for disabling the pig's immune system, as the information will aid in their work of developing an improved vaccine against PRRS, said Fang.

PRRS is one of the most damaging swine diseases worldwide, which indicates the continuous need for vaccines, said Fang. The disease is costing the global pig industry billions of income, with the US losing about US$560 million annually.
