Prosecutors in Taiwan seize 10,000 kg of diseased pork

Prosecutors in Yunlin county in Western Taiwan seized more than 10,000 kg of pork from an unlicensed factory Wednesday (Mar 29) and the authorities warned consumers to purchase only officially approved pork products.

The pork seized was believed to have come from sick pigs. The meat factory where the diseased meat was found was run by three brothers surnamed Lee and was not registered. Four dead pigs were found at the residence of the eldest brother

According to the prosecutors, some of the pork have already been distributed to meat processing factories in other cities producing sausages, spareribs and other pork products.

While prosecutors said they were cracking down on the distribution network, the Council of Agriculture advised consumers to buy only pork products that carry the CAS (Chinese Agricultural Standard) label.
