Smithfield Packing to retrench staff in Maryland

Smithfield Packing Co. is expected to retrench 76 people at a plant in Maryland early next month, the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation announces.

According to documents filed with the department, the layoffs will take place April 6 at Smithfield's plant at 5801 Columbia Park Road in Landover, Md., as part of a workforce reduction.

Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Spokeswoman, Shannon Davis, said that the filing came in Thursday morning.

A Smithfield spokeswoman confirmed that the information was accurate.
