Indonesia to stop corn imports by 2014

As the domestic production is already enough to meet domestic requirement, Indonesia will no longer import corn in 2014.

Agriculture minister Suswono said the country's corn production averages 17-18 million tonnes a year, enough for the animal feed industry in the country.

However, producers of animal feed continue to import corn on lack of communications between growers and consumers among the feed producers, Suswono said.

Animal feed producers have said they prefer to rely on imports because inefficient distribution of corn from small farmers across the country would not guarantee regular supply.
