NFU livestock board re-elects Mackintosh

The National Farmers Union (NFU) livestock board chairman Alistair Mackintosh has been re-elected for a second term.

The board will also have a new vice chairman, John Hore, following the board elections held on March 30.

Mackintosh, who farms beef, sheep and arable on the west coast of Cumbria, said, "It will be vital that we work to get the best deal for British livestock farmers and have our world-leading standards given more recognition within the global marketplace."

This will mean better engagement with Europe over some of the challenges facing the sector. "The future of animal movements will be another key issue for the NFU livestock board, as will the push for a review of electronic identification (EID) and progress on a more realistic, transparent and functioning supply chain," he said.

"Livestock production continues to be attacked by single issue pressure groups that fail to recognise the complex interactions between climate change and the need to produce more food for a growing population. I will continue to deal with misinformation and promote the sector's ability to develop rounded solutions," he added.
