Philippines confident to export poultry to South Korea by this year

The Philippines is confident that local producers could start exporting chicken products to South Korea before the end of the year.

Agriculture Undersecretary Berna Romulo-Puyat said poultry raisers are now in the process of meeting all that the South Korean government requires for importing poultry meet from the Philippines.

Romulo-Puyat said local producers can very well meet the requirements of the South Korean government and does not think producers will encounter problems for as long as they complete the requirements.

She noted that Asian countries now prefer to export poultry products from the Philippines as the country remains free from the dreaded bird flu virus, which has crippled poultry industries in the region.

The Department of Agriculture noted that the South Korean market is as huge as the Japanese market, which has already relied on the Philippines for its poultry products following the onslaught of the bird flu virus in Thailand.

Romulo-Puyat said the Philippine government is keen on developing new markets such as South Korea for farm products as part of efforts to ensure that producers would survive the global economic crunch.
